June is Great Outdoors Month, a perfect time to get on your bicycle and take off. Here are ten things everyone should at least think about doing this month in celebration of summer and nature.
10. Get on Your Bike
Get on and go! Travel down your block, use your bike as your primary mode of transportation, travel a new path you’ve never tried at the park, or simply see where the road takes you.
9. Go Camping
Check out a new campground you’ve never been to, or return to a childhood family favorite. If all else fails, simply camp out in the back yard with the kids or your sweetheart. You can often rent equipment (or borrow it, as we do) if you don’t have any, too.
8. Get Active
Aside from biking, you can hike, swim, run, jog, dance, mountain climb, and participate in dozens of other outdoor fitness activities. If none of these sounds appealing, try your child’s hula hoop on for size—or simply grab your iPod for a quick walk around the block.
7. Relax in the Shade
If it’s too hot to do anything—or you simply want to spend your day off outside—set up your own hammock and nap in the shade. Bring out a book and a glass of ice cold lemonade for an enjoyable afternoon outdoors. Spread the picnic blanket out for a nap, or…
6. Eat Outside
Who doesn’t love a picnic? Pack up your favorite picnic food—from sandwiches to fresh cheese and fruit plates—and eat outside for the evening, whether it be at the park or in your own front yard.
5. Get Artistic
Paint rocks, go on a nature hunt for cool finds to use in projects, whittle a walking stick, or mold some animal footprints.
4. Learn
If you teach a class, consider doing it outside whenever possible. Take your children on nature safaris to find whatever you can find. Identify all of the plants and animals you can.
3. Listen
Sit in the stillness and listen. What do you hear? Meditate in the summer breeze, or simply listen to the birds tweet.
2. Get Messy
Play in the mud left over from summer storms. Eat juicy watermelon and spit out the seeds in a contest. Get sand all over your feet. Make homemade ice cream or sno-cones and eat them up.
1. Get Outside!
It doesn’t really matter what you do as long as you get outside and play! If it’s hot, wear some shorts, or jump in the creek. If it’s sunny, slather on some sun block and pop a hat on your head before heading out. If the mosquitoes are a nuisance, keep them at bay with your favorite repellant or some cinnamon, eucalyptus, or peppermint oil.
